Ladders provide quick and flexible access to elevated work areas. Safe use requires choosing the right ladder, ensuring a stable position and carrying out careful inspections.

The following information will help you use leaning ladders, stepladders and multipurpose ladders safely in accordance with EN 131 Part 3.

Before using the ladder

Before each use, check whether the ladder is suitable for the planned work.

Pay attention to the following points:

Do not use damaged or incomplete ladders.
Check rungs, steps, side rails, feet and safety devices.
Remove dirt, oil, paint, snow and other contamination.
Make sure that you are physically able to use the ladder safely.
Secure ladders against slipping and damage during transport.

Ladders used commercially must be inspected regularly by a competent person.

Using a ladder correctly

Always face the ladder when climbing up or down. Maintain a secure grip and wear suitable footwear.

For safe use, observe the following:

Never exceed the maximum load.
Do not lean too far to the side.
Keep your body between the ladder side rails.
Keep both feet on the same step or rung.
Do not use the ladder as a bridge.
Only carry lightweight and easy to handle items.
Avoid excessive sideways loads.
Do not use ladders outdoors in strong winds or adverse weather conditions.
Whenever possible, maintain a secure grip with one hand while working.

Ladders are primarily suitable for light and short duration work. For longer or more demanding tasks, safer access equipment such as platform ladders, mobile scaffolds or mobile elevating work platforms should be used.

Which steps must not be used?

On leaning ladders, the top three steps or rungs must not be used as a standing position.

On stepladders without a platform or handhold, the top two steps or rungs must not be used.

Always follow the manufacturer's markings and operating instructions.

Maintenance and storage

Repairs and maintenance work may only be carried out by a competent person and in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications.

Store ladders in a dry and protected location where they cannot be damaged or deformed.
